Lift cables translate spring tension into movement at the bottom of the door. They are thin, they are under load on every cycle, and when one frays or unwraps the door immediately stops travelling square. A cable repair is really two jobs: replacing the damaged cable and finding the reason it left its drum in the first place. Describe what the door is doing in the booking form and mention which side has dropped.
Cables generally last as long as the springs they work with, and in practice they are often replaced during a spring job because access is already open and their cost is small next to the labour. Cables that live in a damp, salted garage age faster. Once a cable has frayed, kinked, or been off its drum, its remaining strength cannot be judged by eye, so replacement in matched pairs is the right call rather than re-seating the original.

The cable's hardest working point is where it loops through the bottom bracket. Repeated flexing at that radius, combined with grit and moisture from the driveway, breaks individual strands. Once enough strands go the remaining ones carry more load and the failure accelerates quickly.
If the door stops unevenly, gets stuck on an obstruction, or is closed onto something at the threshold, the cable can go slack and hop out of its grooves. On the next cycle it winds back in the wrong place. That is why cable calls so often follow a door that was closed onto a bin or a mound of ice.
Cables sit at floor level, exactly where snowmelt, road salt and grit collect. The residue holds moisture against the strands long after the puddle has gone, and corroded steel loses strength before it looks obviously bad. Bottom brackets and the lower track corrode from the same source.
A loose set screw at a drum, a bearing with play, or a bottom bracket that has worked loose changes where the cable wants to sit. It then winds unevenly, and the door climbs slightly out of square on every cycle. Replacing only the cable leaves that fault to repeat itself.
Brampton's newer subdivisions were laid out with narrow frontages and, in many blocks, paired or shared driveways, so cars, bins and snow piles end up close to the door opening. That geometry is exactly how a door gets closed onto something and how a cable goes slack. In the Mount Pleasant block plan area, where garages open onto rear lanes, the doors also sit on tight paved aprons that trap slush and grit against the bottom fixtures. Salt residue carried in from Highway 410, Bovaird Drive and Queen Street accelerates the corrosion side of the problem.
Lift cables are part of a loaded system. Do not pull on a slack cable, do not try to rewind one onto its drum, and do not loosen a bottom bracket while the door is up, because that bracket is holding tensioned steel. Running the opener on a door that has gone out of square drives sections into the track and can bring the door down. Leave it closed and use the online form.
The door is secured so it cannot drop while the cable system is opened up. Where necessary, spring tension is let down under control first. Nothing at the bottom bracket is disturbed while the door is still relying on it.
Both cables, both drums, the shaft, the bearings, the rollers and the lower track sections are examined. A frayed cable on one side regularly turns out to be downstream of a seized roller or a bent rail on that side. The origin has to be identified for the repair to hold.
Cables are replaced as a pair in the correct length and rating for the door's drop, then seated so both drums wind identically. Drum set screws are torqued and the shaft is checked for end play. Corroded bottom fixtures are addressed while access is open.
The door is cycled by hand and checked for even floor contact, equal cable tension and rollers tracking cleanly through the curve. Opener force and limits are then rechecked so the operator is not compensating for a mechanical problem that has now been fixed.
